Sunflower Crochet Motif

A sunflower crochet motif needs a textured center and clear petal count. This version uses a 24-stitch brown center, twelve golden petals, and a final tidy edge. It can be sewn to a granny square, added to a wreath, used as an applique, or made into a small coaster if you add one extra round of single crochet around the outside.

Materials

  • Worsted cotton in chocolate brown, mustard yellow, and golden yellow.
  • 4 mm crochet hook.
  • Yarn needle, scissors, and pins for blocking.

Center

  1. With chocolate brown, make a magic ring.
  2. Round 1: ch 2, work 12 dc into the ring, sl st to the first dc. You have 12 dc.
  3. Round 2: ch 2, work 2 dc in each stitch around, sl st to join. You have 24 dc.
  4. For extra texture, work one surface slip stitch circle between rounds 1 and 2 with the same brown yarn.

Petals

Join mustard yellow in any stitch. Each petal uses two center stitches. Repeat twelve times: ch 3, work 1 dc and 1 tr in the same stitch, work 1 tr and 1 dc in the next stitch, ch 3, sl st into the same stitch. Move directly to the next stitch pair for the following petal. Count carefully; the 24-stitch center should produce exactly 12 petals.

Optional outer edge

Join golden yellow to the tip of any petal. Work 1 sc into each chain and stitch around each petal, placing 2 sc at each petal tip to prevent curling. This adds firmness and makes the motif easier to sew flat.

Finishing

Pin the sunflower with all twelve petals evenly spaced. Steam from above and allow it to dry flat. Weave the ends on the back of the brown center, then use a matching sewing tail to attach the motif to a square, bag panel, wall hanging, or wreath base.

Color tip

Use two yellows if you want the sunflower to feel more dimensional: a darker mustard for the first petal stitches and a warmer gold for the edging. Keep the brown center matte and firm so the petal ring remains the main focus.
