Beginner Crochet Rose Pattern

This beginner crochet rose is made from one simple strip that curls into a flower. Instead of shaping individual petals in the round, you crochet a scalloped row, roll it, and secure the base with a yarn needle. It is a good first rose because you can control the final shape while sewing: roll tightly for a bud, or loosen the strip for a wider open rose.

Materials

  • DK cotton or acrylic yarn in dusty rose, cream, or soft lilac.
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook.
  • Yarn needle and scissors.

Gauge and size

Gauge is flexible for this project. A 41-chain strip in DK cotton makes a rose about 2.25 inches wide. For a smaller rose, begin with 31 chains. For a fuller rose, begin with 51 chains. Keep the chain count in a multiple of 10 plus 1 so the petal repeats stay even.

Rose strip

  1. Ch 41.
  2. Row 1: work 1 sc in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. You have 40 sc.
  3. Row 2: ch 1, turn. Skip the first stitch, work 5 dc in the next stitch, skip the next stitch, sl st in the next stitch. Repeat this petal sequence across. You should make 10 scalloped petals.
  4. Fasten off, leaving a long sewing tail.

Assembly

Lay the strip flat with the scallops facing up. Start rolling from one short end, keeping the straight single crochet edge aligned at the bottom. Roll the first two petals tightly to form the center. Let the outer petals loosen slightly as you continue. Thread the tail through a needle and sew across the bottom edge several times, catching every layer of the roll.

Finishing

Spread the petals with your fingers. If one side looks taller, press it down and add an extra stitch through the base. Sew the rose to leaves, a stem, a headband, or a gift tag. The finished flower should feel secure at the base but soft at the petal edge.

Tension tip

The strip should curl naturally but not twist into a rope. If the rose feels stiff, go up half a hook size or loosen the foundation chain. If the petals flop open too much, use cotton yarn or sew one extra pass through the base.
