Crochet Tulip Pattern

This crochet tulip pattern makes a neat cup-shaped flower with three front petals and a simple stem. The tulip is worked as a small tube, then the top edge is shaped with folded petals. It looks best in smooth cotton yarn because the stitches hold their shape and the flower can stand upright in a crochet bouquet.

Materials

  • DK cotton in lilac, dusty rose, or butter yellow for the flower.
  • Sage green yarn for stem and leaf.
  • 3.25 mm hook, yarn needle, fiberfill scraps, and optional floral wire.

Flower cup

  1. Round 1: make a magic ring, ch 1, and work 6 sc into the ring. Pull closed and sl st to join.
  2. Round 2: ch 1, work 2 sc in each stitch. You have 12 sc.
  3. Round 3: ch 1, repeat 1 sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch around. You have 18 sc.
  4. Rounds 4 to 7: ch 1, sc in each stitch around. Keep 18 sc each round.

Petal shaping

Flatten the top of the tube gently and divide the 18 stitches into three groups of 6. For each petal, work across 6 stitches as follows: sl st, sc, hdc, hdc, sc, sl st. Repeat around the opening until three rounded petals are formed. Fasten off with a long tail.

Stem and leaf

For a soft stem, ch 26 with green yarn, then sl st in the second chain from the hook and each chain across. For a firmer bouquet stem, crochet around floral wire only if the finished project is decorative and not intended for young children. For the leaf, ch 12, work sc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc down one side, then mirror the stitches along the other side.

Assembly and finishing

Add a tiny amount of fiberfill inside the tulip so it keeps a gentle cup shape. Sew the bottom of the flower to the stem. Attach the leaf about one-third of the way down. Steam lightly, then curve the leaf by hand before the yarn cools.

Shape tip

The tulip should not be stuffed firmly like a toy. A tiny amount of filling supports the cup while still letting the petals fold inward. If the opening stretches, run the finishing tail around the inside rim once before sewing the flower to the stem.
