It is worked around both sides of a foundation chain, which creates a pointed tip and a rounded base without any complicated shaping. Make several in different greens to add depth to crochet flowers.

Materials

DK or light worsted cotton in sage, olive, or dark botanical green.

3.5 mm crochet hook.

Yarn needle, scissors, and a stitch marker.

Leaf body

Ch 12.

Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 3 tr, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc. This completes the first side.

Ch 2 at the end to form the pointed tip.

Rotate the chain and work into the unused loops on the opposite side: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 3 tr, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc.

Sl st into the first sc to close the round.

Stitch count check

Each side has 11 worked stitches, not counting the chain-2 tip. Around the full leaf, you should see 22 side stitches plus the small point. If one side looks shorter, check that you worked into the unused loops of the original chain rather than into the same side twice.

Vein detail

For a simple center vein, use a yarn needle and one strand of darker green yarn. Bring the needle from the back at the base, make one long straight stitch to the tip, then return to the back. Keep the stitch relaxed so the leaf does not pucker.

Finishing

Steam lightly and curve the leaf while warm. For bouquet work, leave a long starting tail and use it to sew the leaf to the stem. For garlands, weave in both ends so the leaf can be stitched wherever spacing looks balanced.

Size adjustment

To make a longer leaf, begin with 14 or 16 chains and add extra double crochet stitches near the middle. To make a rounder leaf, replace the tallest treble stitches with double crochet. Always mirror the stitch order on the second side.

Make a test leaf before producing a full set so your bouquet leaves all match in length and width.

This easy crochet leaf pattern is useful for flower bouquets, wreaths, garlands, appliques, and small botanical details.
